Illinois Valley Fishing Report 7/3

ILLINOIS RIVER: The river is closed to all recreational boating, however
catfish and carp can still be caught from the shore in the backwaters.
Cut bait and night crawlers are taking most fish. Bow fishing is the real
draw to the river right now with endless backwaters and flooded tributaries
drawing carp, gar and other rough fish. Obtain permission first as most of
this land is private.

EVERGREEN LAKE: Saugeye are hitting jigs tipped with minnows or crawler fished
on the weed edges 10 to 15 deep. The south side of deer island is doing
very well. Crappie are hitting at deer island also in submerged trees
7 to 8 feet deep.

HEIDECKE LAKE: Walleye are doing well taking crank baits trolled along
the rip rap shore 12 to 15 feet deep. Stripe bass are hitting chrome
rattle traps in open water, watch for feeding fish on the surface and
approach quietly making long cast as not to spook the school.
